Stolen Child Tax Credit Cheques - Help?

My Mums child tax credit cheques have gone missing (2 of them) and, though we're 99.99% sure who took them,we have no way of proving that until they are cashed or someone ATTEMPTS to cash them.
We have phoned local post offices to see if they have been cashed (last night they went missing,we phoned an hour ago) and they havn't been cashed anywhere nearby yet.

My question is what can be done in the mean time,as my Mum can't go until Monday without money and what should be done about the stolen cheques?

  • Contact the police if you think you know who the culprit.

Phone TCO to report them stolen; they should give details the amounts of the cheques and the serial numbers, your mother would also be issued with a TC241 form on which she will need to give details of the missing cheques.

Unfortunately they are unable to do anything until they receive a completed TC241 form. From here they will investigate and re-issue new cheques.

Thanks - what do you do if you don't know the details of the cheques? All she knows is the name and amount really?

    Thanks for the help,though.

So there is nothing to do to get an emergency payment or something before Monday as she has no money now and obviously can't wait until forms are filled in,sent off, read, etc.

It will not be possible to get any sort of hardship payments until Monday at the earliest.

An advisor at the Tax Credits helpline will be able to tell her the serial numbers etc. of the cheques so she can fill in the TC241 missing giro cheque form when she gets it. They can also advise where the nearest tax credits enquiry centre is, and she can go there, explain the situation to them and ask for an emergency hardship payment. Whether or not she will receive one though is at the discretion of the enquiry centre.

HMRC enquiry centres do not open at the weekend so she will have to wait until Monday. If she is going to go then she needs to take 2 forms of ID. 1 must be photographic and the other must have her name and current address. Examples would be passport and utility bill.

Staff at the enquiry centre can print off the TC241 form for her to complete. The form asks if the missing giros have been reported to the Police and if so what the incident number is.

The issue of a hardship payment, which will not necessarily be the full value of the missing giros, depends on strict criteria including how many giros have been reported missing in the past.

I think Pam meant the actual centre where she could go and get a hardship payment. The helpline can't give her a hardship payment.
  • Enquiry centres are "face 2 face" and only open Monday - Friday.

Contact centre (helpline) is open Monday - Sunday 8am - 8pm.
