Personally I think it would be better to know. You can concentrate on sorting things out together and hopefully give each other the support it sounds like you need. When she does eventually tell you...jump on here and vent your feelings about it, I wouldn't recommend taking it out on her as it's probably going to be really hard for her to tell you.

I understand that you can't get your wife to tell you. It just seems a bit of a sham that she won't open up but of course, there will come a time when she'll realise that she'll have to. Of course not paying interest on cards will help but you could also nip over to the 'payment a day' thread. It's a very basic way of reducing your debt little by little. I'm not the best at offering advice howver if I was you I'd look for the best long term deal with the lowest transfer fee you can find.

On your assets on the SOA you've put your house down as 14,000 wheras I suspect you mean 140,000.

It makes a huge beneficial difference when you then look at the bottom line, not nearly as worrying ..

Well done for facing your debt, you'll need to convince your wife to take up MSE habits as well as the kids and yourself and you'll find it much easier.

Get the kids to clear out their grown out of things and have an ebay/amazon/play.com flurry - I've totally suprised myself by making £600 in 2009 so far and I haven't sold anything I've missed at all.

    Good luck

Suggest you get your wife to register and log on here - it will help her enormously to correspond with other people who are in debt. Also if she has responsibility for the menu planning side of things she can look on the Money saving Old Style forum for meal ideas that won't break the bank. Do you get the weekly MSE email? If not, on the MSE homepage you should be able to find the place where you request the weekly email of moneysaving tips. You can sort the situation together if you work at it.

    That makes a huge difference.

You may well find that the store cards have horrendous APRs.

Do you have stuff round the house that you can sell - books, CDs and DVDs on amazon, kids stuff for a car boot etc? One OP here raised £1000 from her old books. That could wipe out the store card debts and make a big difference to the budget.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

That's a lovely post, there will be alot of people on here that will be able to help. Did you and your wife manage to have a chat last night? It's nice to hear that you're feeling a bit better about your situation.
