Hi, we spent last week at Craig Tara.....still love it! However it was so expensive on the Haven site (£405 for 3 nights) that we booked with folks we found on Ad Trader....craigtaracaravans.co.uk I think it was which was £190 cheaper but then all the extras started adding on.....like bed linen (take sleeping bags) and entertainment passes (they were cheaper to buy from reception than the private seller).

If you go with a private seller just be sure to ask first about the add-ons and dont't be landed with them after you've commited yourself like I did.

Also/ we weren't asked once for our passes.......... just a thought........;)
You'll make my day if I know I've been helpful to you in some small way,
so please press my :T thanks :Tbutton x
  • We have been to craig tara and i would say it was a good site.....good size swimming pool (lots of slides etc) plenty of entertainment for the kids........the beach is next to the site.....and within walking distance of the camp is a fantastic animal park Heads of ayr farm park http://www.headsofayrpark.co.uk/ great day out for the family. There are buses that come in and out of the park regularly taking u into town etc. The only downside we found was that the park itself is very large and well used.... meaning that it gets very very busy peak season. we had a great holiday though. Not been to setton sands but i believe it is a far smaller site which having been to many haven sites generally means less facilities and less entertainment for the kids and often there is less staff available to deal with and queries or to even run the activities they have advertised.
    Hope that helps

  • We stayed at Craig Tara last year and have just got back today from a parkdean camp just outside Ayr called Sundrum Castle which was about half the price of Craig Tara.
Considering we drove 400 miles to get there we were not disappointed in the slightest. It is not as big as Craig Tara but is about 10 mins from Ayr and about a mile from Coylton.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ramada/Days Inn BRG thread.

Hi, I've been to seton sands and Sundrum. Both are much smaller parks than Craig Tara and the facilities are smaller.

Sundrum castle (it was a few years ago, may have been done up), basic pool changing rooms acceptable. Amusements a little dated although that did mean that you could find machines that did not cost £1 a shot. No franchises like BK, there was a chippy or you could eat in the bar area. Entertainment ok, not as loud and in your face as craig tara, not quite so much light up crap for the kids to buy. Our caravan was fine, clean and tidy. No fair ground or anything, did have a play area, was ok, more for under sixes. You really would have to drive to go anywhere.

Seton sands - I'd say is better than Sundrum, though both are similar. Again the pool is basic with a toddler pool, no slides or anything. Pool was very warm when we went so great for young kids. Changing rooms acceptable. Amusement area was ok, quite small but new ish. There is an adults only bar and a family bar. The usual kids disco and character things and then some sort of singer/band later. Family bar was very busy when we went, struggled to find a table.

Foodwise theres are really nice chippy but again no franchises like bk Theres a shop for essentials. The playpark is good but is seperate from the entertainemnt area and you have to cross a road (the main road into the caravans) so young children would need to be supervised. The beach is just outside the park and across a road (a busy fast A road so not suitable to send the kids themselves) the beach is ok although there are much nicer ones within walking/driving distance. You can walk into Seton(10-20 mins) which has a large Co-op and quite a few reasonable priced pubs that do food. Just normal fish and chips/lasange type stuff, nice enough for less than a fiver. A few nice cafes too.
The buses run from directly outside the campsite to central edinburgh and a day ticket is only a few pounds.

I used to stay 10 mins up the road from seton sands. Have been in the amusements, pool and pubs/clubs a few times when I was younger as my mum used to own a caravan down there and rent it out.
Its a good site but not that great to be honest. Its pretty small with not alot to do. Some people will like it but im used to going to Haggerston.

We sometines take my nephew to the park as its great fun byt next to a busy road so as lynnexxxo said they need to be supervised.
Alanda's chippy on site is amazing. they are sooo nice. We have driven down plenty of times just for chips and parks at gullan beach and ate them.

Its opposite Port Seton beach which is horrible. If you follow the beach round for 10 mins you are at gullane beach and it is far nicer. Beach is packed on a nice day. There are 3 car parks aswell all split from each other.

You can easily walk into Port Seton. Theres a harbour and just next to the harbour is another great chippy. Theres a huge park there too.

Where about do you stay? Are you travelling far? If I were you I would make the extra hour, 1 less hour trip and go to Haggerston. Its far better and I enjoy it more than abroad?!

Its an hour down the road, just 10/15 mins outside berwick and its amazing. It has indoor/outdoor pool, horse-riding, amazing entertainment with about 3 or 4 clubs in the amazements. Theres activities on all day. Theres a Burger King, boating pond, golf, golf buggies and bikes you can hire. It really is amazing.

    xx
