  • Well I've just driven back from the champagne region and I've sworn I'll never drink another drop. Awful weather, we arrived in Epernay at 12:05pm on Wednesday to find it shut until 2pm!

Spent the next hour and a half dragging ourselves and three hungry children around the town centre looking for a McDonalds, but there wasn't one - ended up having to buy ridiculously expensive filled baguettes that they nearly choked on. The town itself was barren and ugly.

I can understand the French not liking McDonalds as a symbol of American world influence and corporate domination, but you'd think they'd have some sort of equivalent for heavens sake! Or do they all just go home and sleep for two hours??

Anyway - they can keep their champagne. It's vintage cava for me from now on (not that sparkling chardonnay muck though).

I have to say i have been to the Champagne region 3 times before, yes the weather is not the best (great for growing grapes though), and no they don't have Macdonalds around every corner. Epernay itself is a wonderful place, some of the champagne houses are fantastic. I can highly recommend the Mercier cellar tour. Champagne boulevard is wonderful to walk down, they have recently been re-laying all the road and pavements, but the houses like Pol Roger and Moet and Chandon are there just to name a few. I have also been to Reims too, again this was a wonderful experience. Bollinger is there, love the stuff!!!! We also found some wonderful low price champagnes, you don't have to buy the expensive ones to get nice champagne. I have found that value for money Pierre Boever (featured on Oz and James's big wine adventure BBC 2). We paid 13.20 Euros per bottle when the Exchange rate was 1.25 Euro's to the pound. They also do a wonderful Vintage for 15.20 Euros. This is really good grand cru champagne and the experience we had in their house was brilliant. I think they were shocked when we bought 36 bottles of Champagne. But they invite you in, sit around the dining table and the lady tells you about their champagne and then offers a free tasting the only disappointment was another couple who turned up, only really because this place has been on TV and they got a free glass of Champagne each and went without buying anything. Just to tell their friends i suppose "oh we've been there". Another very nice low price champagne is Marcel Vezien. Try it, it is lovely. Bought a 6 litre bottle of Mercier (200 Euros), that is a brilliant experience, having a party with a bottle that size, my friend bought a 6 litre Joseph Perrier again very nice. Also went up to a retail park in Troyes, there is a wonderful champagne shop there, the man who runs it really knows his stuff, for 5 Euros, he will give you a few glasses of champagne, some very nice ones like Moutard again not that expensive.
As for things being dead until 2pm, this is French culture. Also there isn't much open on Sundays as regards shops, but that is the way they are over there. The champagne houses are open on Sundays though.
I feel like there is a lot more to discover in Champagne, i have hardly scratched the surface, i would suggest though that taking children on a holiday like this would be cruel, this is an adults only holiday, nothing for kids, it would be too boring!!!
As for Cava, there is nothing wrong with Cava, it is made exactly the same way as Champagne, except it is made in the Cava region of northern Spain. If anyone would like to know about visiting the champagne region, drop me a message i will only be too happy to help.

  • Hi Fellow moneysavers,

I went to Morrisons yesterday to see if I could buy some of this champagne for my sons wedding in July. They did not have any stock on the shelf, so we asked if they would be getting some in. I was told to come back today and place an order, they would then ensure the required number of bottles (12) would be ready for me to collect as they are having a delivery on Wednesday morning. Needless to say I will be popping into Morrisons at Strood after work on Wednesday, where they will be holding me a couple of cases at the excellent price of £9.99 a bottle, and I get free glass hire wooohooo. :j
  • Okay Morrisons told me (well they didn't so much as tell me, I had to phone them today) after I had visited 3 times and ordered it with the wine manager, that they don't think they'll be getting any more in, so they wouldn't be supplying me with the said champers.... obviously got too excited too quickly!!! But they could at least have been honest when I went in...... I can feel an email to Morrisons coming on!
