Un-occupied home - Insurance

If a home is left un-occupied (for a year) any idea on what the insurance costs will be for a re-build value of £130,000 and contents of £30,000. Any idea of the cost and any recommendations on the best place to look for insurance?

    Its not cheap, you will be looking circa £550 and the cover is normally restricted with a big excess.

    How come your house is going to be unoccupied for so long

    May have an opportunity to work away for a year. Nothing agreed yet but just looking at costs and then got to decide if I really want to go.

    They cover is normally very limited.

    Have you thought about renting it out to normal tenants? The insurance would be circa £250 a year with few restrictions plus you earn rent. It can be better for your house having someone living in it maintenance wise plus its a lot more likely you can get a burts pipe or fire in an empty house.

    There are likely to be conditions in the insurance too - like regular checks on the property, and the water system being drained if it's unoccupied in the winter

    Yes thought about it but then you see programmes on TV with houses being turned into canabis factories with £10,000 worth of damage. If you get a good tennant then great, if you don't worry!!!

    Still I think I have a good few months maybe 6 months to think it through and see what the options are.

    Get a decent managing agent and ask them to visit once a month or so

    or ask around people you know ... you may find someone who is looking for somewhere to live. They could pay you rent, and the place would then be occupied.

    Alternatively find someone you trust who can keep an eye on it while you're gone.
