Questions regarding Chip & Signature cards

Hi folks,
Hope all is well - got a few questions regarding chip and signature cards that i hope someone could clear up for me please. I bank with Hsbc and have a visa debit card currently chip and pin but after reading a few threads its worried me about cards being cloned and the pins being used fraudulently where the banks wont refund the money due to the pin being used. Although being registered blind i have managed to over time work my way around the various pin pads, but now im worried that people may overlook my pin which i would not be able to tell if they are doing so. . . So my questions are when you have a signature card you can you still use a cash machine? Although i dont use them often i do use the automated paying-in machines and more of the staff seem to being removed in favour of these. And lastly, how do signature cards work at the point of sale - do they just swipe the card and the receipt follows for me to sign or would for example a supervisor have to come over to allow the magnetic strip to be used? I also sometimes use the self-checkouts in both Asda and Tesco - do signature cause problems with these? Sorry for all the questions but will put my mind at rest!

I can't say for debit cards, but although my Nationwide Credit Card is Chip and Signature, it is still accepted at cash machines with the PIN originally issued.coolesticeking wrote: »And lastly, how do signature cards work at the point of sale - do they just swipe the card and the receipt follows for me to sign or would for example a supervisor have to come over to allow the magnetic strip to be used?
You just put the card into the Chip and PIN terminal and the till spits out a receipt for you to sign. Usually no problems are encountered, although some staff seem confused. This is usually overcome by saying "The bank makes me sign for my purchases".coolesticeking wrote: »I also sometimes use the self-checkouts in both Asda and Tesco - do signature cause problems with these?
It normally comes on screen that you need to wait for the supervisor who taps in their code. It then spits out a receipt for you to sign, and you're allowed on your way.43580 -
Strictly speaking, you can't use ATMs with a Chip and Sig card. Whether it's possible to is another matter, but you shouldn't expect to be able to as a matter of course.
Also, don't expect your signature to be looked at in much detail. The cashier in Sainsbury's the other day had to swipe my card as a fallback and didn't even glance at my sig strip.0 -
With the chip and signature card I have:
1. With self-service tills in Asda they have a pad for you to sign with a special pen.
2. With POS they give you a receipt to sign in the old fashion way.
BTW I don't use my chip and pin card in cash machines.
However some cashiers are not use to Chip and Signature cards so are:
1. Rude - Robert Dylas
2. Don't know what they are doing so have to enter your transaction, cancel it, enter you transaction, cancel it then enter it correctly so you can sign it - Odeon Cinemas
3. Automatically turn the keypad towards you or hand it to you even if you tell them clearly that it's a chip and signature card - every shop with a moveable keypadI'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -

1. Never had a problem with Robert Dyas. I've always pulled the card out when it says "Pls Remove Card" and handed it to them. Maybe it's just staff training in your branch?
2. This annoys me. Wilkinson have a tendency to do this and drives me insane. I just tell them that no matter how many times they do it, a receipt will always be printed... eventually they get the idea.
3. I just go with it and take the card out when it tells me. Then ask for a pen43580 -
Many thanks to everyone for the responses. Looks like it will be trial and error but will just have to see how i get on. Not very keen i must admit at wilkinsons with the pin pads very funny plastic over the buttons and not sure if ive pressed them or not. ah well, thanks again and hope you all enjoy the rest of the weekend.David

A couple of points to the original poster:
First, if someone clones your "chip and signature" card, surely if they have your PIN they could just go to an ATM and use it to get your money?
And secondly, if you want to make sure nobody's looking over your shoulder at your PIN, cover the pad with your other hand.0 -

If you have got a Chip & Signature Card, and sometimes they do arrive with a PIN, then make sure you don't open the PIN. Either take it back to the bank or send it back (Unopened) and ask your card issuer for a receipt.
This means that if your card is cloned or nicked and it is used with a PIN, then your card issuer, not you has a serious problem.
Secondly - There are numerous ways and means of obtaining PINs the most common:
Dodgy ATM's fitted with cameras or false PIN entry devices.
Dodgy Chip & PIN Entry devices in shops and garages.
The above two target cards and PINs indiscriminately and on an industrial scale.
Individuals are targetted too for their PIN and Card or PIN and Card Details0 -

I agree that when all atm's have been upgraded to chip only then this might become a problem but it will not be yet for many years.0 -

If someone uses a stolen Chip & Signature card to buy something and the signature on the receipt didn't match the card, wouldn't the retailer risk being held liable for the fraud?
Yes. But that was always the case (since before chip & PIN), and quite a lot of retailers didn't bother checking then (I remember some BBC quality "investigative reporting" where their bloke went in and signed for a bunch of stuff as Mickey Mouse).0
