Personalised email?

I use webmail, hotmail mostly, but also mail.com.

I have a domain name, and I forward the emails to my hotmail account, so tyler@uktyler.com is forwarded to my hotmail account.

Is there a way of personalising my outgoing mail so it comes from uktyler.com?

My domain register people can do this by setting up a yearly subscription, is there any way of doing this free? I don't mind setting up a new email account, but I don't know much about pop3 mail.

Sign up for a Google Apps account, you'll be able to use your domain name within GMail, it's free, and infinitely better than Hotmail

Many thanks for that, I now have personised email!

This site is great, no matter how obscure the question, someone will have an answer!

I couldn't agree with this more. Its very sad to see white vans driving around with email addresses printed on them like this:

    somerandombusiness@hotmail.com

    or

    somerandombusiness@btconnect.com

If anyone here has a small business and uses such a contact address, then you should know that you can buy a domain name very cheaply (literally a few quid a year) and forward email addressed to it to GMail. You can then have a proper email address for your contact card, van, letter headings ect... instead of the above. You would then be able to use this:

    contact@somerandombusiness.com

And because you own the domain (rather than one email address at an online email providers domain), you could use any number of email addresses to help you organise you correspondence. For example you could have:

    contact@somerandombusiness.com
    sales@somerandombusiness.com
    support@somerandombusiness.com
    service@somerandombusiness.com

You could then use GMails filters and labels to do the organisation for you automatically. I hope this above doesn't sound complicated because its not! If anyone is interested in doing this let me know. It'll take a bit of explaining though.

That is true seeing a van with a gmail.com or hotmail.com email address looks very unprofessional and makes me think twice about them.

I would use google apps for getting a personalised email with your web address in it.

Why would you worry if their business has absolutely nothing to do with IT? Plumbing? Decorating? Carpet-fitting? Tree-pruning?

Not everyone is (or even needs to be) IT-literate...

But it looks a lot more professional.

My domain is my surname, I am lucky in have a rare surname.

I had email forwarding, to allow people to email me at first@surname.co.uk

My problem was configuring my email so I could prespond with that address, and not firstsurname@hotmail.com.

A domain costs so little now, and even website design is so cheap, a business without a web presence is falling behind.

Tree pruners, decorators and carpet fitters could have pictures of their work and plumbers at least a list of contact numbers.

Now I can explain to my family, who are even less computer literate than me, how to access their own personilised email.
