MOT Failure

I booked for an MOT car failed and I said hold onto the car till I decide what to do, I think I did say I was scrapping it. within 14 days I phoned back and asked for it to be repaired, I was told they would try and get it retested for free and the repairs would cost £300 plus £40 for MOT. I phoned again a week later and was told it shouldn't have the cost of the second MOT although he couldn't be sure yet. But less than £400....
I've just been on the MOT check website and it doesn't mention the car being tested? Surely if it failed it would be listed as failed?
Also if I never took the car back then technically it never left the garage and as I did tell them I wanted it repaired within the 14 days - I shouldn't be charged a second test?
Plus just found out when I was arguing a ticket that my car has received another ticket yesterday ... well I haven't had the car for weeks! I imagine this second MOT will be added on regardless to pay for the ticket - when I phoned the garage they haven't mentioned the ticket yet...

Yes this is probably a common way of getting away with doing unnecessary repair work - as they never actually input the test results, they cannot be accused of unnecessarily failing a car. If they haven't done any work yet I would ask for the car back and take it elsewhere for a second opinion.0 -
Well I spoke to them today and was told they were behind with the work but would get it done by monday.. too late me thinks. If they do a re-test would it show as a re-test would I have any sort of proof?Help me to help you :santa2:0

Re test has to be done within 10 working days. Or it is a full test again.Genie

I bet lots of garages who fail cars dont record them
I certainly know the garage I use always do the test first find the repairs needed fix it then just issue a pass certificate without an official fail.
Unless you think that it shouldnt have failed on what they said or the cost is high whats the problem.0 -
Mine religiously puts the fails on the system. Last time I had an MOT among a handful of things I needed a brake pipe replacing. I was duly handed the MOT fail and got it sorted. However, when I took it for the retest, there was a small problem that the pipe was incorrectly clipped. The MOT tester took a minute or two to sort this out, and then issued a fail certificate (brake pipe incorrectly clipped) and then a pass at the same time. Obviously this is to prove they're not up to any monkey business regarding the tests.LinasPilibaitisisbatman wrote: »I bet lots of garages who fail cars dont record them0 -
I think at the end of the day it comes down to individual garages and how you trust them.
I dont think the absence of a fail certificate alone suggests any sort of fraud/scam.0 -
They *have* to give a fail certificate to be able to put the second test in as a re-test. Plus if they can't follow procedure and do it right, then what else are they cutting corners on?!LinasPilibaitisisbatman wrote: »I dont think the absence of a fail certificate alone suggests any sort of fraud/scam.0 -
mine lists all FAILS my corsa failed on a loose track rod nut, the tester tightened it up for me and issued a fail and a passSealed pot challenger # 10

hmm it was just a lot for repairs... I've spent quite a bit on this car and then another £350 and if he can't catch the retest plus £42 just wanted to see if this retest was as strict and if they haven't put it on as a fail then surely they can retest it free. Like anewman said if they can't follow procedure on this then what else don't they follow procedure onHelp me to help you :santa2:0
