Recommend car to learn in

I am looking to buy a car that will be used for local journeys and for my daughter to learn to drive in. It must be economical to run, reliable and cheap to insure. I am looking to spend around £4000. I would prefer 5 doors, but would consider 3.

Any recommendations much appreciated.

The smallest you can get. It will make it easy to pass the test.

Something with a soft gear, tight turning circle and a good power steering. I would say an old Micra will do the trick for less than a £1k.

Fiat Panda, wonderful little cars and very reliable. I'd try a Mitsubishi Colt, Yaris, Daihatsu Sirion or Kia Picanto. Avoid the small engines 3 cyclinder 1.2 VW cars.

The best new small car now is the Hyundai i10 but thats out of your price range.
