HELP PLEASE!! 16yo moped rider insurance

My son will be 16 just after Xmas and would like a moped. I've got a couple of quotes (eg Churchill) and am horrified that the annual cost is in the order of double the value of the bike!! Can anyone please point me in the direction of good sensibly-priced insurers for this type of first time user? Is it worthwhile insuring in someone elses name and putting him down as a second driver??
Help please!!! It was much easier when I was a lad....

No, because that's fraud and fraud is a criminal offence.
Also, because when he totals it they won't pay up.
Manufacturers/dealers often do promotional deals including cheap/discounted insurance on mopeds/scooters. Have you considered this?
And, if you are insuring a cheap secondhand machine, third party insurance would be the obvious choice.
Hope that helps and I'm not stating the obvious.0 -
Thanks for this. More specifically, I'm looking at a private sale (so no chance of dealer's offer) of a bike around 3-4 years old. Not sure if 3rd party only is adequate.
Having tried a further quote since the original posting (Insurance 2000) and finding this no better, I can see why so many youngsters are driving around with no insurance (and the rest of us have to foot the bill in bigger premiums)Just because you used to be you think everybody else is, don't you?0 -
Suggest you try https://www.clickquote.com and look at tp only cover rather than tpft.
Happy Christmas

To expand on the type of cover you take out forget about comprehensive. The excess could easily be £500.00 and the premium about £1000.00. Even for TPFT the theft excess could be £250.00 or more.TP only should cost around £400.00 depending upon where you live.

Thanks for the suggestions- I'll try more quotes based on TP only. Hopefully that'll get the price down to a more realistic level!
Happy Xmas to you too!!Just because you used to be you think everybody else is, don't you?0 -
Good luck with getting a decent quote.
My wife insured her first moped for around £100.
I insured my first CAR for less than £150 and never paid more than £150 in my first 3 years' driving ... starting at 17 with a provisional licence!
Things certainly have changed ... I am fairly convinced that the insurers didn't have decent MI regarding their claims levels at different ages and cross-subsidised young male drivers (like me) at the expense of older, safer motorists. I would be fairly devastated if I was a 16/17 year old now facing £000s in premiums for a basic old moped or car.0
