Openoffice - how do you get text file to word format ?

I needed excel & word on my laptop. I posted in an earlier thread and openoffice was suggested. I've downloaded it and everything seems fine - I was happy.

I e-mailed a couple of spreadsheets & letter to someone. He could read the spreadsheets fine but couldn't open the 'text' document which I think equates to 'word'.

Is there something I need to do/can do to the text document what means it comes up as a word type document on his computer ?

Many Thanks

Save as Word format, Save / Save as in the file menu and change the file type in the dialog...

File>Save As also lets you save your Open Office Spreadsheet documents in seven different 'flavours' of Excel formats.

Word 97 to 2003 is the one you want.

    Ok, bear with me.

If I do - file - save as, my options are :

    Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (doc)
    Microsoft Word 95 (doc)
    Microsoft Word 6.0 (doc)
    Microsoft Word 2003XML (xml)

So which one do I need ?

    Thanks

Unless your colleague is using a very ancient version of Office, the 97/2000/XP format is the one to go for, it's pretty much universal everywhere.
