Yard sale?

Hi guys
Just wondering if it's actually legal to set up a table in my front garden and sell stuff? As seems to be the same for viirtually everyone these days money is very tight and I've got lots of clutter I could sell but that isn't necessarily worth listing on ebay if you get me. I'd love to take it all to a car boot sale but err, we don't have a car lol! Nor do we have anyone we could talk into taking us unfortunately. We did a small one a couple of years ago which was just around the corner so we spent about an hour carrying all our stuff around, including our dining table to put things on...but the only carboot in this town now is in the town centre.

I'd love to just set up a table and get rid of some stuff, not expecting to make big money but anything right now would be fab. My husband seems to think it's illegal.

Any ideas most welcome

Thanks

Kimberley

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

I'm sure they must be legal, I sometimes see Garage sales advertised in my area which is much the same thing, I went to one last year, they had stuff stacked up on their drive and I picked up a few nice things. I've seen people set up tables outside their houses too, so go for it!

When the weather is good I often set up a small table on the drive and put stuff out. I don't however charge anything I have a pre printed notice that says the stuff is free to a good home but a charity donation to xx charity would be appreciated. I also get a signed receipt which I laminate from the charity every now and then which I put out as well.

On a good day I can take £2 (wow!) children and old people leave the most donations, middle aged well off looking people are the most likely to take stuff and not even rummage for their purse. One really old man knocked on the door and tried to give me £10 for some videos and Cds but I refused to take more than a pound as he looked like he needed it more than the charity.

I grow my own fruit and veg and often have surplus which goes on a table at the end of the drive with an "honesty box" - everyone around here seems to do it, so if it's illegal then we are all guilty as charged! (And there's more than one police officer living in the village).

The man opposite to me is a police officer as well, he often has a browse and is rather fond on true crime type books (odd ly enough), he does leave a donation to the charity as well.

I have a small table out on the drive today and I think I just frightened the life out of someone! I have a new cat and I don't want her out the front as the road can be busy and I caught sight of her on the table so I opened the door and called out 'get down' and a poor man almost dropped to his knees..I had to give him a whole pile of books to stop him from passing out with fear.

I didn't know how to start apologising, he must have thought i meant him.

I don't think its illegal. Have seen a few going on around our way, but don't expect a roaring trade, it depends how many people you get as 'passers by' to where you live.
Sometimes places have indoor boot sales, which in effect aren't boot sales.

I do a couple of car boots a year, and have to say have always been really pleased, make between £100-£200 each time, thats my holiday funds! Due to do one in a couple of weeks if the weather stays like it is.
Is a sufferer of SAD, so don't blame me, blame the depressing English weather!!!
