AmEx 5% cashback 2nd time around - any experience

Hi All,

I'm just about to finally get my cahback from AmEx (anniversary of getting the platinum cashback card) and am then planning to cancel it as i have other cashback cards at better cashback rate.

I was thinking of waiting a few months after cancelling the AmEx and then re-applying to take advantage of another 3 months 5% cashback on a new card. Has anyone done this? and how long would you suggest I wait after cancelling it, before applying for a new one?

I am waiting for a call on Monday to close mine.
I will ask them if they can re-offer the 5% deal on my existing card, if not I'll ask them how long before I can re-apply.

I think you need to wait a minimum of 6 months.

Not to sure either, but I recently went back to AMEX after 'closing' my accoount about 4 years ago, strangly I have exactly the same card number as I had then! (I keep statements for years!) but I am getting the 5%, but they obviously keep your details for quite some time.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

Yes you have to close the account then wait for at least 6 months. Then you can apply as a brand new customer and get whatever offers are around at that time. Have done it myself.

Just to close off this thread. I got the cashback from my first AmEx platinum card (after the anniversary).
I was going to wait 6 months before applying again but heard on another thread on this board that you don't need to wait 6 months.
So I've applied again and got my card and am now getting 5% cashback again! Yay!

  • keep in mind that you'll have to spend at least £3k to get any cashback now -- the product has changed recently.

    :D I'll do my best!
The way i read it, I'll get 5% cashback on whatever I spend in the first 3 months, as long as I spend over £3000 on the card over the course of the year.
I'll use the card as much as humanly possible over the first 3 months and if that doesn't reach £3000 then I'll just carry on using the card until i hit the magic £3000 sometime later in the year, before reverting to use a different card.

  • no...you'll only get 5% on the first £2,000 in spend during the first 3 months. The next £1,500 you spend will get 0.5%.
