First Full payslip - PAYE & NI seem waaaay too high. who do i speak too?

hello.

Usually my issues are solved by reading other peoples threads. Not this one though.

Just started a 'new' job. My first payslip 4 weeks ago, was only made up of 2 weeks - as i joined half way through the month. So i ignored the tax on that one.

Anyway, the problem is with my first FULL month:

my total Gross Pay for 4 weeks is £2409.96 (as wrote on my payslip)
My PAYE deduction is -£374.00
My NI deduction is -£212.73

Totaling £586.73 tax.

My NET PAY: £1823.23 (all according to payslip)

However, listentotaxman.com says - my NET PAY for 4 weeks is £1961.75

Does any one know where my £138.52 has gone?
Who do i speak too?

Or am i mad, and the website is wrong?

Thanks for your help!

PS> my tax code is 647L if that makes a difference...

Seems to depend whether your gross pay was for "4 weeks" (which results in a net of £1961) or for the "month" (resulting in a net of £1823).

Will you get 12 or 13 payslips a year? (ie are you monthly or 4-weekly paid)

Your payslip's tax deductions would suggest monthly.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I get paid every 4 weeks, it seems to fluctuate very slightly, i'm not paid on the same date.

I am paid per hour. £15.96 - and worked 151 hours in this pay slip. (39 hour week - bit short of 156 hours cause of bank hol)

ah - i believe it is 12 per year. pay day is always "around" the 20th of each month - it gets moved to the end of 'what ever week' the 20th is on, i think.

    I agree with Tigesteroonie.
Remember 1 month does not always equal 4 weeks, and you need to find out if you are paid monthly (for example: every 28th, or every last Friday of the month) or every 4 weeks (date will change but it will normally always be the same day, eg Wed 1/4, Wed 29/4, Wed 27/5, Wed 24/6 and so on).
    hth
Also the website you quote is 08/09 calculations, remember we will now be moving to 09/10.

    Thanks.

I had changed the option on the website to 09/10
    my pay dates:

    20th April
    22nd May
    22nd June
    20th July
    24th Aug
    21st Sep
    19th Oct

if that helps. Sorry, new to all this :(

I changed the options at the top of the page to 09/10, and I suspect the OP did too - otherwise the figures would definitely not have matched!

OP, if you're always paid on roughly the same date each month (allowing for weekends), then you are monthly paid, and the tax deductions are correct. The fact you worked four complete weeks during your first monthly period is merely coincidence.

the 22nd of every month 'works' until Sep/Oct, then the 22nd falls on a WEEK day, NOT a weekend though...?

oh balls.... solved it, i think:

    i get £15.96 per hour.
    39 hours per week.
    so £622.44 GROSS.
(use the WEEKLY pay on listentotaxman.com)
results in £464 per week NET pay.
    i've worked 4 weeks, so 4 x £464 = £1850 ish

ah, so it IS right.... I am paying the right amount of tax?

Working it from first principles (i.e using the actual rates and allowances) the figures for tax and NI seem correct (in fact the NI seems a bit under so its probably done from manual tables which vary a bit from month to month!).

I think you're still confused about whether you are monthly or 4-weekly paid. Your list of pay dates suggests monthly, even though - during this last month - you've worked exactly 4 weeks. By monthly, I mean that you get one payslip per month, a total of 12 in the year.

It's all to do with how they apply the tax-free & NI allowances. 647L is a "monthly" code, not a 4-weekly code.

I would say that their figures are correct on the basis of being monthly paid. Only your pay office can confirm for definite, I would suggest you give them a call or go and see them at your earliest opportunity to put your mind at rest.

great - thanks for your help :D

i'll give them a ring and get confirmation that i AM monthly. The only thing that was confusing me, was Sep/Oct pay date (22nd i guess) IS on a week day - so i didnt understand why it was shifted....

    Anyway, thanks again
