My son is 27 and as just passed his test so is going to buy his frist car.
What car Insurance would he need or be better with the car will be in his name and he will be the only person driving it.

It depends on what level of insurance he wants. Fully comprehensive will of course cover his own losses as well as any losses sustained by a third party. Third party fire and theft would be cheaper but only covers him against what it says on the tin, loss of his car due to theft or fire and cover for third parties. That would mean that in an accident his own losses would not be covered unless he had any claim against the other person.
Third party is probably best suited for an old car that can be written off with little financial impact, for a better car then fully comp is probably the best way to go.
If he has any questions regarding level of cover then it is probably best to talk direct to the insurance companies, or even a broker to explain exactly what level of insurance will suit him best.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. As soolin says its heavily related to the value and type of car.
If it were me for a first car I would be buying something cheap (£500 perhaps) and then take third party only insurance. That way you can earn yiour no claims bonus and not worry too much about your car as no-one is likely going to want to steal it, and even if they did wouldn't be worth claiming for.0 -
Sometimes 3rd party fire & theft is cheaper than TPO.
This is because not many companies offer TPO so it reduces choices.
So don't assume less cover is cheaper.
It isn't always the case.
I have fuilly comp this year, because it as cheapest with cashback.0 -
Yeah with my old car it was more expensive third party only than with third party fire and theft...Indecision is the key to flexibility
