Whats happened to all the apex fares?

Just had a look on 'The Trainline'. If I want to travel tomorrow, the cheapest fare is an off peak saver £116.70. I threw a few random dates into the equation 2/3 months down the line. The cheapest fare again was £116.70. Twelve to eighteen months ago I could regulaly find apex fares sub £50. Has something changed? I don't understand.

2-3 months may be looking too far ahead - release dates are given here:

Have you looked for single tickets each way? Apex returns no longer exist - only advance singles. Some companies (cross Country in particular) are not being over generous with availability.

And you can save a bit (the booking fees) by NOT using the trainline - any of the rail company sites will do.

If you post your actual journey you may get some more specific advice - all the above is a bit general, shooting in the dark.

I didn't know apex returns had been done away with. I've found odd single tickets for £46 but very, very few. The next cheapest single is £109. I'm totally flexible on dates for the next month.

I can fly for under £50. It's just that I like travelling on the train.

You need to give us more details of where you're going from/to. We're pretty good at helping people and offering advice here, but we need something to work with!
