Car Accident

I had a car accident last night which was my fault. I didnt admit to the fact but its obvious its my fault. I was travelling at about 30mph towards some lights and could not see the colour because of the low sun. I braked suddenly to stop and very harshly as it was wet ( i now know its not clever to do) and i skidded out onto the road and into the side of a car travelling across the junction. We were near a police station and we both gave our statements and details were passed etc and i have now passed this onto the insurance company. My car recieved little to no damage so i wont be claiming against my insurance (fully comprehensive) though the other car had damage. The police officer told me that as i went through red lights i could be charged with dangerous driving but probably not to worry due to the wether conditions and that the accident was not serious.

My question is that as its pretty obvious that im at fault and that both insurance companies are under the same umbrella (churchill and direct line) will there be a big investigation or will my insurance just pay out. The reason i ask is that i was planning to look at changing my car in the new month or so and dont want all this hanging over my head really.

Just one other thing - i had an advisery on my mot from 4 weeks ago saying my brake efficiency is not 100% and to get it checked but the mechanic said there was no urgency for this and it was just a recommendation. I was planning on having this done with my service before i sold my car next month. Do you think this will mean my insurance wont pay out as i wouldnt mind but it passed the mot and it was only a few weeks ago.

Your insurance won't "just" pay out because if there are any injuries then they could take months or even years to assess properly.
However they probably will decide you are fully liable pretty quickly and therefore from that point of view it's all done and dusted.
You will have a fault claim against you.

The advisory should not make any difference.
It's only an advisory and does not constitute negligence.

Your insurance may (probably) rise becauseof the accident.
So I suggest that you check out quotes before purchasing a another car when you see models you like, because you don't want to purchase a car and then find it's too expensive to insure.
If you aren't young and this is a single accident then you should not find a huge rise in premium.
However if you are youngster or have other claims in the past 3 years then you may find there is a significant rise.

It should not be hanging over you because your insurance will deal with everything, however it will count against you for the next 3 years.

It refreshing to hear someone who accepts they are at fault in an accident, you would be amazed how many people try and blame other factors or the other driver rather than just putting their hands up and admitting it was their fault.

Give your Insurers a call to report the accident and mention you are considering changing car. They should confirm they are not interested in inspecting your car
  • I would expect they would admit liability quickly - they may send you a form to complete indicating whether you think the accident is your fault or not. Let them know your intentions and see what they say.

Again, very refreshing. I hope everything works out for you.
