only a 64bit OS can use 4gb+ ram. the machine will only currently be using 3.25gb of the 4gb ram installed in that machine0

thank you

A 32 bit operating system can only address up to 4096MB/4GB, so anything above and beyond that is redundant. Out of that 4GB your memory mapped devices, like graphics card, soundcards, pci controllers, bios etc all use some of the physical address space so you often end up with ~3.25GB - 3.5GB actually available to the operating system.0

As mentioned its 64 bit time for that much ram, Also XP 64bit is awful so its also Vista time really.

Bit pointless running 8GB of ram in a desktop really. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Yes why would you need so much ram?

A 32 bit operating system can only address up to 4096MB/4GB,
Not true, given a processor supporting PAE (ie Pentium Pro or better) and a suitable motherboard more than 4GB of RAM can be used with many 32bit operating systems. Alas this does not include Windows XP or Windows Vista.0
