What's wrong? Error message on PC

Had my PC for about 2 years and 1 month and runs on MS Vista. This morning I switched on my PC and went straight to the Windows Boot Manager. It told me to insert the Windows disc, something I don't have as the majority of retailers don't supply customers with a disc as they used to:mad:. Why is this?

So I tried to access Windows and all I got is a blue screen starting with 'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'

It mentions something about I have recently installed some new software or hardware. I haven't installed any software for 7 weeks and hardware for 7 months!

I am getting worried as I DO use the PC for many things. I am using my father's work laptop at the moment to write this.

My questions are: What is the problem? Is it recoverable if I get a local computer repairman in? Due to the age of the PC, shall I start again? Also if its recoverable, do I have the (dis)pleasure of installing everything I have again? Though 80% is backed up.

can you reboot the machine and jot down the full error please, include any funny looking strings of numbers as they are very usefull.

the PC should be recoverable without getting anyone in to do the job for you. if it is asking you for a disk you may be able to repair the windows installation but you will need a Vista disk to do this, ask around a few people to see if they have one, it isnt illegal to use another disk as long as you use your own lisence key.

One of the first things you are prompted to do is to make a set of recovery discs through Windows incase of a problem later on down the line..

I did these when I first got the PC, but the discs got lost when I moved back to my parents. Purchased the PC when I was living with my ex boyfriend.
