Does anyone have any ideas as to how this could be done? I presume I would need some software to connect a VCR to my PC, record onto the computer and then burn to DVD??

You need some hardware and some software, basically you need an analog to digital converter that takes the analog video and converts it to a digital signal that the PC will understand.
Lots on the market, here is one http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00026Z6S8/202-1965821-6983802That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Given the plunging cost of home DVD recorders you are probably better off getting one of those and using it to convert the VHS to DVD format - it will be quicker. You can always edit the disk afterwards. They promised the earth...and delivered mud. Technically though it did meet the spec.0

If it is a one off thing you want to transfer you could try a local AV company to see how much they charge to convert your tape or just buy a VHS / DVD combi as they are not that expensive if you are planning to convert quite a bit of stuff over0
