Could you pay manually rather than D/D? Obviously it means that you would need to keep a careful check on online banking and make a note to yourself to make sure payments werent missed, but if you pay as soon as your statement is available then your cleared funds will be available for use on the Halifax card quicker?

I've tried to do this but unless I have a Halifax current account they won't accept payment over the phone.

I've got CCs with higher limits which I don't use, I've got this card primarily for saving Marriott points which I can exchange for hotel stays.

Have you learned anything from your experience with your Halifax credit card that you can pass on to other MSE members?

Halifax accepts payment online though ;)

Which is more important to you, your good credit rating or the extra Marriott points?

Hi Charliezoo. I use to pay DD like you, but got in a similar situation some years back so stopped. As jen_a_c suggests could you pay manually? This doesn't mean doing it over the phone. I pay my Barclaycard over the internet from my Nationwide account.

As soon as I get my statement through, I note the payment date and immediately set up my Nationwide account to pay in full on the due date. This allows me time to make sure sufficient funds are in place and also not to leave it last minute, as the internet is very problematic at times where I live. It normally takes about 3 days to go through to Barclaycard and show as paid from the due date.

It does take a bit more work then a DD, but I like being in control of what I keep where until needed.

I find banking online very good, easy to use and very movable between different organisations. But you have to be prepared to check regularly and keep a watchful eye on spending.....not a bad thing in my books.

PS. I have just noticed on a leaflet that came through with my recent statement, that Barclaycard are trying to be very helpful!

"Pay by Direct Debit - tell us how much you want to pay off each month - from minimum payment to the whole amount - and pick a day that's right for you."

I would think other banks could do the same.
