Door handles come off - whose responsibility is it? (rented)

The door handles on both the boiler door and the bathroom door have got looser and looser over time, - the screws are short and the wood is soft. One by one the screws came out and the handles got looser.

The landlord is saying that I have to fix it, - I am saying that it's 'wear & tear' - and not damage that I have done, so surely it should be maintained by them?

Petty I know, - but whose responsibility is it to fix these silly door handles?!

  • if you've wrenched the handle off then yours.
if it has 'worked loose' then his.

trouble is how do you prove it either way - probably quicker to stick some more screws in yourself

Take the door handles off stick some matchsticks in the holes and put handles back on, jobs a gooden!
  • OMG what a minor issue to post on here

Take the handles off, fill the holes with filler, let dry, replace screws (B&Q for less than a couple of quad) go for beer, enjoy life

Instead you spend time on the phone using credit

The holes in the doors have become loose, - so the matchsticks will do the job of filler will they?!?

You're right, - I'm not sure if I have any filler.. - i'll have a look, if not, I suggest taking the price of it off the the rent at the end of the month ;)

Yes - they work perfectly as a filler for slightly too large screw holes in wood. They are, after all, made of wood. Or you could spend your time whittling a piece of wood down to match stick size if preferred.

In fact they work better than filller as filler when dry is normally quite brittle and powdery so when you put he screw in it just disintergrates.

For an A1 job glue the matchsticks in with a little PVA.
