Gutted

Sorry this isn't money saving but I need to get it off my chest. I've just found out I've been unsuccessful in my application to my no1 choice of Uni. I have had 2 other offers but as the next best thing is 45 miles away it's going to be difficult to get there from 9-4 4days a week as I've got 4 kids aged 12 and under. I feel like I've been kicked I am so gutted. I have emailed the Uni to find out why I was unsuccessful, hopefully they will offer me an alternative choice course.
Has anyone got any ideas please for any free or cheap pick me ups to make me feel better?

:( Sorry for having a moan. Thanks, Sam. :(

is it a very popular course? there's a longshot that you might be able to get something there in clearing in the summer, but that's leaving it quite late.....

Thanks Melancholly. The course is social work and apparently is very popular in my area (Lancaster). Its ok I guess I still have other options so it's not as bad as I feel it is. A couple of days to think about it and I'm sure I'll come up with the right answer that will solve the problem. I'm sure theres people in a lot worse situation than me so I have no right to moan really!

You can do this with the OU, may not be what you had in mind... BUT there are reasons to at the very least to look into it, as the courses are cheaper than uni and often free depending on household income, and not just low income but they take into account the number of ppl in the house hold.

Just an option, hope something works out for you.

I didnt get my first choice of Uni when I applied back in the day but dont be dismayed, maybe you could do open university? or is there a local technical college which works in association with a local uni providing degree courses more locally? xxx

Contact your next best offer and see if all the timetable requires attendance - some sessions you only need to attend if you are having difficulties. Also some of the syllabus (lectures and tutorials) may be available online to registered students. My son was set to move out to attend Uni 50 miles away when he found out his modules could be covered in 2 and a half days. Most weeks he can get away with 2 days attendance (train links are good) and downloads the lectures he misses.
He did a 2 year HND at our local College and they have good links with 2 universities, so he is just doing his 3rd year "top up" now. He has missed out on the Uni experience but has saved loads of money and managed to keep up with a part-time job, as well. He's predicted a 1:1 and hopes to leave home to do a Masters!

i'm at college just now and maybe my info won't help.but for one uni's get paid more on individuals,so they have a limit they gotta reach for the year, and if ya in the right post code area then you;'ll get in ,,,after they have decided who should get it on what merits..also.is it a follow up course, from a previous, cos if not,the local colleges are doing social work courses and they arent all full time...

There were several sw courses available in clearing last year, but it might well be more popular this year because of the bursary and fees being paid. If you can wait a year, it might be worth asking where you can improve your application and trying again next year. Did you get to the interview stage or was it purely on your application.

It's worth remembering that an alternative course may not offer the financial incentives that social work courses do.

Also, as others have said, check what the lecture schedule is for your second choice. I'm doing MA social work at the moment and compulsory attendance is three days a week (although placements are obviously different)

Ok, here's a little update but first of all thank you to all of you for your kind words of support.
Well things seems to be a lot better - 2nd choice Uni have accepted me and have said I can take my first year at a local college. It means I will miss out on the usual 'campus life' but I'm not worried about that anyway. Secondly, I passed my driving test to day so it wil be much much easier to get there too!

So thanks again everyone, Im much happier now!
