Job or Career?

Hi Everyone
I am currently in full time employment. However i want to go back to college and go into further education to pursue a career, rather than be stuck in a dead end job. I need some advice on my options financially. I am 20 and live at home, i want to work around my full time course and will only be able to work 15 hours a week. I have done some research but i never seem to get very clear answers. I need to save £500 for my course and then for uni i have no clue what so ever on costing, i will be living at home when attending uni, but is there any benefits etc open to me when i start college and through to uni?

Im so scared of leaving my job as security is such a plus, specially at this time, but i think if i dont do this now i wont ever leave. Need some advice guys :)

Thanks :)

What course are you planning to do next, what qualifications do you already have and what are you planning to do at university?

Until you get to HE level you can often manage to study part time and work full time which would be a better option for you.

If you have worked for 3 years before going to university you will be considered an independent student and your funding won't be based on your parents' income, even if you have lived with them during this period.

For college you may be able to get an adult learner's grant. You say you'll only be able to work 15hours a week, is this because you are intending on applying for benefits such as JSA? I don't think as a student this is actually possible.

Information for funding for your college course can be found here
As ONW said, if you have been working FT for three years you will be classed as independent when you go to university, if not then funding will be dependent on your parents' income. There's a student finance calculator for university funds here

    Hey!

I am not an expert on the money side, though you should be able to get Adult Learning Grant while at college (up to £30 a week).

But, your situation seems very farmilar to mine (read my thread here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1044739&highlight=) I am 20 like you and like you I just did not want to be in a dead end job all my life, It was really getting me down! Anyway, I am nearlly finished with my first year of my course and it's the best thing I have ever done!

    Go for it!! :).
