Selling house soon - nightmare...

I want to move house - there's nothing essentially wrong with the house (only 28 years old) but it looks a bit tired. I want to move towns, hence the move, and we don't have any problem neighbours, disputes, or plans afoot to bulldoze the land and build another Tesco on it.
Honestly - what's the house market doing at the moment?
My plans are to get the house tarted up (a bit tired looking after 7 years there, although we have a less-than-3-year-old bathroom) and try and put it on the market around May/June time, hoping to catch the young families who want to move over the summer holidays.
It's a good little house for a smallish family or young couple...or a first time buyer...do you think my plan is cunning enough to work? I honestly have no idea about the best time to sell, and all that stuff, even though I did it 7 years ago...it all seems like a horrible nightmare (it was...I sold my own house, moved counties, moved jobs, bought a house with my (now) husband, lived apart for a while - then sold the first house before we completed on the new one and ended up homeless (well, OK, living in his old bedroom at his parents with our stuff scattered across three separate locations) for six weeks.
We need to paint the majority of the house, replace the old kitchen worktops, and replace the horrid old carpets.
I'm bracing myself - what would your advice be?

Where abouts are you living at the mo? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I'm in Cambridgeshire. Soham to be precise. House prices are relatively stable and it's an area attractive to first timers as it's the cheapest and closest reasonable sized town to Cambridge, where all the jobs are.I may be skint but at least I'm Relentlessly Positive!

i am in a very similar situation. I have 2 bed ground floor flat shred ownership ( needs decorating) but will make money I think if a plan comes off. With that we are moving to a smaller house in a cheaper area . But to be honest I was a FTB last time ( baffled throughout I think) and OH is FTB.
Now the work begins of emotionally preparing yourself begins ( this is the stage we are at) like knowing WHAT a hassle the whole affair might be. My advice is, save up enough for yourself for a holiday after completion, should you need it! Then you have something to look forward to if the whole process becomes hellish!
Have a look at other properties in the area , have a drive about, see whats up for sale the pix of the interior, and work out how you can get the same effect for the least amount of money. Decor CAN be cheap, its the building work that might make
And... relax.
To be honest thats as far as Ive got without going
Good luck with it
