I asked around a few places when in the JQ however I was informed that Palladium engagements rings are extremely sparse (if any at all)

    Just to update

I can only recommend the service from Drip Gold

We went in and had a look in 90% of the shops in the JQ and most had generic solitare stones of one mount or another, and very few of them had anything different or unusual

Drip Gold had a few which really stood out.

They have some which are their own designs. We were interested in palladium as I already mentioned here, and asked them about it. They checked with the people who put together their rings, and whilst they said they had never done an engagement ring in palladium, that they felt there was no reason why it should not be possible.

So we gave it a shot - we were delighted with the ring which was a copy of another one of their designs, - the original was white gold. Do not listen to a jeweller who tells you that an engagement ring can not be made from palladium - whether it stands the test of time or not will be evident in the future, but we (and they) see no reason why it would not, it is great.

Also ordered the wedding rings when we picked up the wedding ring.

We bought our wedding rings from Samson Gold on Vyse Street and I can whole heartedly recommend them.

My husband had terrible trouble finding a ring he liked and he found one on the internet which was a three banded ring with yellow gold on the outside and platinum on the inside but we couldn’t find it in any shops and I was dubious of buying off the internet as if he didn’t like ti when it arrived they didn’t offer a refund.

In the end he took a picture on his phone of the ring off his pc monitor and then showed it to the man at Samson Gold. He then made it up after only looking at the picture for around a minute or so and it was absolutely perfect :D

They did our rings at a great price and they gave us £50 discount for getting them both off them. Plus we get a once a year complimentary clean and polish and a few other extras on top.

  • My fiancee and I have just come back from ring-shopping in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham this weekend.

We listed all the shops mentioned in this thread beforehand and visited them all, along with some other which weren't listed here. We eventually bought our ring from G H Moore and Son on 19 Vyse Street.

We just didn't get good vibes from ANY of the other shops: the woman in Newey's didn't know what she was talking about (to the point of jokingly offering my fiancee a Saturday job as she knew more about the rings than she did!), Sampson were helpful but didn't pay us much attention (even though we were the only ones in the shop), Dripgold were just rude, Crown Jules was closed for holiday, and the woman in Peter Green tried to tell us the diamond in the ring we were looking at priced at around £250 was a blue diamond... until we corrected her and said it would be a lot more pricey if it was!

G H Moore, on the other hand, were extremely polite and helpful. The young girl who served us really knew her stuff, talked to us in detail about our ring preferences and budget, joked with us and took time to show us a large selection of rings despite the shop being quite busy. She also explained, and showed us, the difference between a ring which was rhodium-plated and one which wasn't, and allowed us to try on their wedding rings to see the engagement and potential wedding ring side by side. She even knocked off 10% when we agreed to pay with a debit (instead of credit) card, or cash, and resized it in about 10 minutes.

The ironic thing was, this was the first place we went into (about 5 shops down from the Jewellery Quarter train station) and we could have saved ourselves about three hours wandering around the Quarter instead of enjoying the rest of our weekend in the city - but you've got to look, haven't you!

10% off the ticket price? You know its the norm to get at least 10% off the price you see, right? Its like buying a car, nobody ever pays the price you see first. That's one of the things I like about the Jewellery Quarter - everyone is up for a bit of bartering!

We went there (Neweys) yesterday and I really can't praise them enough. Jim took lots of time showing me everything and making me try on lots to make sure I knew what my choices were.

I ended up deciding on a Palladium 2.5mm plain court for the princely sum of.....£70!!! The platinum version is only £180 and most of the other jewellers wanted around £200 for a palladium one, without helping me try anything on. I decided against diamonds set into it, but if I change my mind - it's only £20 extra for each one I want setting in.

Jim even poloshed my engagement ring for me for free and it looks like new again. :j

Just wanted to update on this. The price we paid when we went back and actually ordered the above rings was wait for it........ the princely sum of £47!!!! for mine and OH's £140 which he designed and they made for him.

Would still highly recommend Jim at Neweys. He knows his stuff and takes his time.

My 23 year old son wants to buy me a silver bracelet to be engraved, for a BIG birthday coming up soon. I'm in rural Suffolk with not much choice nearby.

He's a medic in Navy based at Selly Oak and doesn't get much time to shop around. I wondered if he could find good quality silver jewellery in Birmingham jewellery quarter, or is it all diamonds and gold?

I have some pictures I've found online I could give him for ideas, and would love personalised message added (this would mean a lot as he's off to Afghansitan in April:cry:)

We don't know Birmingham at all, so any suggestions for good shops to try would be very helpful, thanks

I know this is late, however Drip Gold in the Jewellery Quarters in Birmingham are fantastic, extremely good value for exquisite pieces. They crafted my wedding band to lock into my engagement ring so they appear as if they were always together... and cheap (moneywise) too! Lovely people as well, not hard sell like the other places around there
