Best alternative to Ebay?

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone else used other auction sites, and if theres any good ones?
I have used Ebid, but nothing sold, that was ages ago now though.
I used to use Ebay, but I got fed up with them! I really don't want to give them my custom.:p
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately all the traffic is on ebay, ebid is probably the next best thing but like you I never sold anything .

If you are selling household stuff, odds and ends then try Playtrade or Amazon for books and music and maybe car boot the rest. if you are trading and selling new goods then maybe look at a website and use ebay to drive people towards your site.

  • Not sure what it is you're selling, but you could try www.gumtree.com

You could try: bigvaluedepot dot me dot uk
They have a free listing offer at the moment
Also there are no final valuation fees

Bonanzle and Atomic Mall both seem to have a lot of cheerleaders. I haven't signed up with either yet but will when I have some free time.

I find my Ebid sales depend on how many listings I have i.e. it's a numbers game. At the moment I've let it slide a bit as I've been busy, expect things will pick up when I get my listings up into the hundreds again.

Of course if you have anything that could be classified as 'supplies' for crafting, that's always a hot seller on Etsy.

    Thanks for all your replies.
I'm going to have a look at a the sites suggested. I'm hoping one of them becomes as big as ebay in the near future, they need a competition!

Ebid have been going for 8 years already, all the big competitors have given up already.

Unfortunately the problem is that you had to come and ask for ideas, that must show how well these other sites are known, If you didn't know of them, the buyers certainly don't.

To generate extra sales, list the same item (assuming you have 2 to sell) on BOTH Ebid & Ebay, in your Ebay listing, insert a direct link to the item in Ebid, don't make this too obvious though, use something like "Click HERE to see my other items" will do, and in the Ebid listing charge a lower P&P fee.

You can also advertise the item on 'Craigslist' & 'gumtree', give a brief description of the item and put "for more info. see" & drop-in a direct link to the item.

Adding a signature to the bottom of your emails stating that you are an 'Ebid Trader' also helps.

Hopefully this weekend, I will get round to adding more items to my Ebid listings.

Encouraging people to put their accounts at risk is not exactly great advice.

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/listing-links.html

Breaches of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:
    -Listing cancellation
    -Limits on account privileges
    -Account suspension
-Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
    -Loss of PowerSeller status

this is still highly prone to scammers
I listed one item a while back and within two hours had someone trying it on for sure and two other's asking questions as if they were interested (not even ebay gets interest that quick. I've had same day'ers but never in less than two hours. ever)

needless to say I've not bothered since

although not ideal, I'd say amazon and play are your best alternatives (though you cants sell any old odd and end on these)
