  • My boyfriend and I went to Sardinia in October 2007. We stayed in Villasimius near Cagliari. It was beautiful - we want to go back but to the north.

We got flights with Ryanair to Algerho for 35 pounds each. We rented an apartment for 10 nights for 500 euros. It was right on the beach. We also rented a car for about 210 pounds for the 10 days.

Cagliari is nice. Alghero is even nicer. Beaches are beautiful.

Alykes in Zakynthos is nice - a couple of music bars but no nigtclub to speak of.Very nice beach - gently shelving into the sea and ideal for young children. We first went in 1985 and returned many time since especially when the children were young.Over the years it has become slightly more commercialised but still charming and not full of drunkards .Athough we have ventured further afield now our daughter is 16 (last visited 2005)would not hesitate to return.

Me and my fiance have been to Alghero, Sardinia quite a few times now (I mainly tend to go for the food as I am 1/2 Italian and get withdrawal symptoms for the real thing! lol) But i also go for the beach there. Didn't like Cagliari or Olbia as much as here.

The Lido Beach is really nice sand and the sea nice and clear. The town is only about a ten, fifteen min walk away where you can get some lovely nic-nacks and visit the famous gelateria for some gelato di nocciola (hazelnut ice cream) to DIE for!

Have stayed in a variety of accommodations, anywhere from self catering across the road from the beach, to staying in the Punta Negra. (Expensive!) . Both were great experiences depending of course on your budget.

Everytime we've been we've flown with Ryanair (sometimes for pence if you time it right!), and cannot fault the airline one bit.
Best time to go is late June/early July as the Italians themselves have their vacations in late July/August and the beaches can get pretty packed!

If you do decide to go here and want to know some good SC places/hotels or some mighty tasty eatieries just let me know!

Be warned though - it can get very boring at night if your not staying in a hotel with entertainment on...There's only so many times you can walk into town...! :o

    Thanks for all the advice:

    - I need to book my holiday today as for various reasons I have still not done this- I also need to go the week of the 18th May before half term and before it gets busy from June onwards

    I am now thinking:

    1. Skiathos - only concern is lack of things to do apart from beaches- will there be enough to do for 1 week - in terms of beaches, some local sightseeing and shopping?

    2. Thassos- seems like a better mix of places to see and beaches etc with local towns

    3. sardinia- still a lot more expensive but looks amazing

any final comments- I will be booking today for sure!

I went to alghero a couple of years ago and loved it. I looked again for this year but the hotel prices seemed to have gone into orbit.

Its got to be Kefalonia for me, I want on holiday in Kefalonia last year and its one of the most amazing places i've ever been.

Its quiet but it is so beautiful - myrtos beach is the place for golden sand or Skala beach which is 1 mile long!:j
