Claiming compensation for taking days off work?

Hi everyone,

We are currently having trouble with our hotpoint fridge freezer. After lots of thought we agreed to pay hotpoint £160 for them to send out an engineer to fix the problem, and this cost included all extra parts and visits.

The guy came and checked it out, and said he'd be back on Tuesday as they'd have to order parts.

Tuesday comes - and they rang saying they weren't going to come as the part hadn't arrived. They said they'd come on Wednesday morning with it ready. We stressed that we could not have them come in the afternoon and so it'd HAVE to be a morning before 10.30am. They said that'd be fine and someone would come at 8am.

Wednesday comes, no word from hotpoint until 11am when they text to say they'll be coming in the AFTERNOON between 1pm-3pm. We rung them saying this was no good!

So basically, we've taken 2 days off work so far between us, and then will have to take ANOTHER day off for when they return.
After ringing they said they could not offer compensation for any of the days we've had to take off work, and could only offer an apology.
We asked for the £160 back, but apparently they have a contract with an insurance company "Domestic and general" who deal with the original £160 payment, and so they couldn't refund this.

Does anyone know where we stand on this? The reason we took the £160 repair was because we couldn't afford a new fridge, and now we are taking days off work for no need!!!!!

what you have for this £160 payment is a repair, plus one years extended warantee underwritten by domestic and general. You'd need to contact D&G to cancel the policy part of the payment, if its within 14days of making the booking. The problem lies with the the charge hotpoint are making for this repair(around £100). When booking they should have stated the terms and condition i.e. they have up to 21days to complete the repair and that you have the right to cancel the repair up to any point that the engineer arrives at your home. Im not sure where you stand if you change your mind about having the repair completed after hes called and ordered parts. Im sure someone with a bit more legal knowledge will post on this soon.

    Thanks for the reply!

We aren't annoyed about the £160 charge, it's the fact that we've been messed around and have had to take this time off work for them not to turn up as they said they would.

We took the original day off when the guy first came around, which was fair enough.
He then said he'd have to return with the part - which is also fair (even though the part is pretty common!). We took that day off work which was when they called saying they weren't coming.

They allowed us to re-arrange his visit for the next day, which we said was fine as long as they came before 11am - to which they agreed and said they'd come at 8am. They then texted saying they'd be there after 1pm?!

Now we will have to take another day off work for the guy to come back.

We aren't concerned with the £160 payment - we just want some compensation for them messing us about, and so suggested this £160 considering they said that they couldn't "do" compensation.

I hope this makes it a little clearer :)
    Thanks again! x
