Outlook Express Version 6 (Vista)
Outlook Express opens all new mail. I have closed preview pane but, even if several new emails arrive, none of them will be highlighted or in bold and all of the envelopes will be open - it is easy to miss new mail as it all appears read (even if there is the small envelope icon by the clock botton right of the display). If I click Tools-Options on the toolbar there is no Preference tab.
Any help appreciated!

In Tools / Options and the Read tab how many seconds is the setting "mark messages as read after displaying for" set to ?
I think the default is 5 seconds.0 -
Set for 5 seconds for previewed messages but I have deselected preview pane. However, I altered to 60 secs, the maximum, but the result is the same - new messages arrived as read0

On the same tab mentioned by geewhiz untick the "mark message as read after" box. This works for me on Outlook express XP.

Thanks - but that made no difference. Previously, before geewhiz mentioned it, it was unticked but displayed 5 seconds. I ticked it and selected the maximum, 60 seconds - which made no difference. I have now unticked - but there is no difference.0

I've tried altering my settings so that my e-mails open upon receipt & I can't get it to work i.e. they appear as unopened envelopes ??
I'll keep trying & post back if I've any luck. (I'll bet it's dead obvious and then I'll have to pretend that I knew all along
