Credit Card Surcharges

I need to pay the balance for some flights shortly and have been told by the travel company that payment by credit card will be subject to a surcharge.
What is an acceptable percentage for this surcharge?
If I go ahead and pay by credit card, I get protection under the Consumer Credit Act if anything goes wrong, but do I get any protection if I use another method of payment (cheque or debit card)?

I often see CC surcharges of about two per cent.

No, you do not get the same protection if you use a cheque or debit card. However, if you use a Visa debit card there is another scheme that might protect you.

Calculate the total price (including the surcharge) and compare it with the offerings of other agents. Then decide.
  • If I paid the deposit by credit card, do I get protection for the whole cost even if I pay the balance by another method?

Anything up to 5% (for Amex.)

If you pay the deposit by CC, you'll be covered under Section 75 for the whole purchase price, even if you pay the balance using another card.

There will be differences between what the customer and the retailer deem acceptable. There is nothing to stop the retailer from any surcharge they like, however it all depends whether they wish to retain their customers or not ;). You could try and haggle over the fee ?

The norm would be around 1.5-3% for using a VISA or Mastercard, whereas an AMEX card is likely to be around 3-5% due to the higher charges imposed on the retailer by them.

You can pay as little as £1.00 by credit card and the remainder by any other means and still have full protection under the CCA for the total cost of the trip.
