These are ok for NTL - Cable.

Some have modems built in some don't. If you already have the NTL modem (make sure it has a ethernet port) then you could get a router without the modem saving you loads of £££££'s.
You can run 4 p.c's off a 4-port router (or even more if your good)
To have a wireless laptop you would need a wireless router and a wireless card for the laptop.

I bought this one when I switched to ntl broadband. http://www.microwarehouse.co.uk/catalogue/item/LKSWL063 it's pretty small, about the size of a CD case0

Essentially the same on my telewest blueyonder cable connection.
4 ports for wired devices and 253 wireless connections available.
They are refurbs on that website but I've had 3 now including the mothe in law and next door neighbours.
No problems at all.
