Job at risk - what is ring fencing?

I've been told that my job is at risk and now in consultancy period. It is proposed that my job role will be removed. However the proposal is that there is another role being created although it would be a demotion. If they say the new role is ring fenced what does this mean for me? Is the job automatically mine if I want it.

"Ring fencing" means that though the alternative role to the one you have would count as a demotion it will not mean you experience a pay cut.
It would probably mean that you didn't get a pay rise either - until the rate of pay for the job you moved to was higher than your current pay.
Sometime an employer will limit the length of time that the ring fencing applies.
Whether the job would be yours if you wanted it is difficult to say. Are there other people who are being considered for redundancy as well as yourself?0 -

Thanks for the reply.
There are over 100 people with jobs at risk so yes. We now have a 90 day consultancy period.
I was unsure if I would have to apply for the new role along with others whose jobs are at risk?0
