I travel regularly south of the border with Scottish notes and have only ever had them knocked back in one place, Ipswich and by jesus what a scene i made when that happened.
On the whole to keep the blood pressure down it's best using cash points south of the border and then get real money when you come back to the promised land.

.
Why? They were well within their rights to refuse the Scottish note.0 -

Although I did get questioned when I tried to use one of the new English £10 notes up here.
I don't usually have a problem using them in England the only place I guess was Exeter but that was only one particular shop. If I can though I usually wait until I get to the airport in England and get my cash out then.2020 Mortgage-Free Wannabes #20 £1495.03/£2760 OP0 -
The last time I tried to exchange Scottish notes in an English bank I was refused. Abbey in Carlisle.
It's time to scrap Scottish notes.
Don't know why you bothered. A large proportion of banknotes in Carlisle are Scottish ones anyway!!
Just use an English cashpoint. The Scottish banks don't charge a fee for this you know - they all belong to the English government now anywayBritish Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

English notes arn't truely backed by the gold reserve, something to do with not being on the gold standard any more.
I must be a rairity, I've never refused a Scottish note even though I'm in Kent. Looked at them longer than an English one before accepting but thats cus I dont see that many.0
