Unvented heating system - new tank required

We moved into our house two years ago and inherited an unvested heating syste. The boiler heats water which is stored in a tank made by Ariston and which then feeds the bathrooms (1 family and 2 ensuite). The bolier also heats water for the upstairs radiators.

Previous owners did not maintain the tank correctly and the anti-corrosion device has failed to the extent that when someone tried to replace it, the thing fell into the tank leaving a hole in the tank itself and the thread to fit the anti-corrosion thing is now unusable

The tank needs to be replaced.

We have two quotes so far for the supply and fit of the Ariston STI 210 tank (like for like replacement). £1500 from BG and £900 from independent Ariston agent.

Any thoughts? Are Ariston agents approved by that company. BG have also quoted for a Tribune tank - any better/worse.

Apparently replacing the whole thing with a combi isn't practical.

thanks in advance

Should cost between 450-500 for the 210 version. Probably about 300-350 for fitting and about £50 for fittings ec, so second quote sounds about right to me.

Good evening: Avoid the Ariston STI...only 5 year warranty and glass lined....far superior products with 25 warranty and steel lined eg. Megaflow, Santon, Oso. Whoever installs your cylinder ensure he/she has a G3 certificate (unvented cylinders).

Thanks for your post, Canucklehead - interested in what you say about Ariston. Attracted by something with a longer warranty as I don't want to be without hot water every five years (the tank that has just gone lasted 6!) I see that Tribune tanks have a 25 year guarantee - are these as good in your view as Megaflow etc?

I would agree with megaflows being the best.

When I was an apprentice almost 25 years ago () my first experience of a megaflo was to fit one for a relative which owned a nursing home under the watchful eye of my gov'ner.

It has had a new temp relief, 2x pres relief, and prob 3 SA,s but all part of maintenance schedule, never had a leak or a fault...
  • Thanks guys - BG have quoted for the Tribune so I think I'll follow this up with them tomorrow.
