I feel you may be neglecting the need to have a valid passport to board the return flight.
I know I wouldn't like to have the hassle of trying to renew my passport whilst abroad on a short holiday.
Why has this thread got so complicated? The OP does have a valid passport for the return leg so it is OK to travel.
As a travel consultant (you not me) why do travel agents always insist on the 6 month rule which is not correct ?0

Coz it covers them if their eejit staff/customers misinterpret the rules. It makes things simple. No one has to make a 'complicated'* decision like looking something up in a table of rules. And they also don't have to keep uptodate with rule changes.
*though admittedly some places ARE complicated0

There are very few countries that insist on the extra six months: Hong Kong and China are probably the only major tourist destinations among them.
There are other countries that also have this rule, Cuba, Barbados, Dubai for example there are others aswell but cant remember off the top of my head.
I agree that the OP should have no problems though in lanzarote, but I would check official advice to be on the safe side.
(Edited to add Mauritius,Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Kenya aslo all require minimum 6 months on passport)£100 - £10,0000

Firstly, the OP hasn't clarified what date the passport expires and the date of their return to the U.K.Why has this thread got so complicated? The OP does have a valid passport for the return leg so it is OK to travel.

Secondly, I'm a travel consultant not a travel agent. As such, if I gave to wrong passport or visa advice to client I would be in trouble, and this often means that we have to call various consulates for updates on their entry requirements. We can't afford to operate on the "just to be on the safe side" maxim that some high street agents are inclined to use.
I've linked the website we use for reference which also includes consulate contact details and, if you care to look, this information is backed up on the Spanish Embassy website.0
