Looking for a VW Polo - any tips

I am looking for a VW Polo for my son. There are quite a few around locally including diesels and various sized petrol engines.

He is not fussed whether it is a 3 or 5 door and has a budget of £1500. Looking about it seems that with that kind of money he should be able to buy something like a W or X reg.

If anyone has any tips, tendancies and things to watch out for specific to that age range Polo I would be really grateful.

if he is young with no no claims bonus the vw will be a bit more expensive to insure compared to other cars in this size.
they are pretty solid cars,only worked on one but not the fastest but fairly simple to fix and service.
