Returning A Faulty Car?

I'm not sure if this is the correct section of the forum but it's the closest I could find!

I have a bit of a dilemma at the moment regarding a second hand car that I bought a week ago.

I bought a used car from an independent dealer last week on finance and used it to take me away for a week long break the day after. The car developed a fault while I was away and was taken to a main dealer to be looked at as it's still under the manufacturers warranty.
I was informed that the car has an engine problem and it was going to need major work to repair it which would be covered by the warranty. I had to leave the car with the dealer and it's still there now being repaired. Due to this I've had to travel back home by train at my own expense and will have to return by train to collect the car when it's finished.

As the car was most probably faulty when it was sold to me, where would I stand with regards returning the car to the dealer who I bought it from?

  • I dont know but it would be a good idea to contact the dealer & let them know there is a problem with a car you want to give back & work is being done on it as we speak.

I would keep the car as you have had if fixed for free the selling dealer could also have also got it fixed for free so I can't imagin they know of the problem.
  • A bit of an update on this. I had the car repaired by a dealer under the warranty then went to collect it. It broke down again on the way home!
I've now owned the car for 14 days and it's spent 10 of those getting repaired and I'm going to have to take it back in tomorrow:confused:

As the car was bought on finance, could anyone tell me where I stand with regards returning the car as being faulty?
I remember reading something a while ago whereby you can return faulty goods bought on finance. I've contacted the finance company and they said they'll send me an information pack but it'll take a few days to get here. Obviously I'd like to get it sorted as soon as possible. In the 2 weeks since buying the car I'm now £200 out of pocket from having to replace 2 tyres on the car and also another £140 out of pocket for having to travel pretty much the length of the country to return home then go back for the car after it broke down when I was away from home

What car is it as we may be able to point you in the right direction.

As for returning the car - you have to give the selling dealer a few go's at fixing it before you could chuck it back.
  • It's a Peugeot.
The repairs are being carried out by a Peugeot dealer as it's still covered by their warranty, The dealer I bought it from aren't a Peugeot dealer and I didn't get a warranty off them.

They were keeping on the right side of the FAS Law then by not selling you a warranty on a car that already had one.

    However, keep us updated...
