Broadband calls?

Hi,

I have just been looking on the BT site and came across the information below.
Just wondering what Broadband Talk is? Does it work the same as just picking up the phone and dialing or is it something much more complicated?

Broadband Talk Evening & Weekend calls
For no additional charge, BT Broadband Talk gives you low cost phone calls over your BT Total broadband connection. With the Evening & Weekend Plan, you get unlimited calls to UK* landlines and Broadband Talk numbers between 6pm and 6am weekdays and all day at the weekends. Plus calls to UK mobiles from only 7.34p a minute† and great rates for international calls.

Means calls of up to an hour to numbers beginning 01 02 and 03, excluding Channel Islands. Other exclusions apply. Redial before one hour to avoid call charges. Opt-in, and a Touchtone phone is required. Quality of reception may not match landline. Service restrictions apply eg 999 calls. Limited emergency location information stored. Service will fail if there is a power failure. Abuse policy applies.

† 8p call set-up fee applies.

Thanks for the clarification guys.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. You opt either for an 056 number or a number with your own STD code (I'd recommend the latter).

You get free options like Caller Display and 1571 (unlike a PSTN line, no qualifying calls necessary) and call barring.

I use it for incoming calls (it's the number I give to the bank and credit card company) because you can just unplug it to let 1571 take calls if you can't be bothered.

I plug a DECT base station into my BT Voyager 2500v router and, although call quality is occasionally less-than-perfect, it's a very-worthwhile (and free) addition.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
