Apart from a mortgage paid up 20 years ago my wife and I pay any money, i.e credit card, energy bills and all the other things necessary for living, in full when they are due and therefore live a life debt free it is easy if you don't hanker after all the latest things. just be happy with what you have.
So totally right oldandwise.... sadly many of us are just figuring this out now - hindsight is a wonderful thing!!!nitha wrote:Cancel that final credit card! And wish I wasn't a 6yo 20 years ago when lucky oldandwise paid off his mortgage.

When I finally reach DFD (May 2011 if not sooner) I will treat my parents and OH to a lovely holiday as I owe my sanity to them at the moment. :T My parents have loaned me some money to get me on the DFW path and OH who is lucky to have a large income and low outgoings has paid for a holiday for both of us this year.
I will also save a HUGE chunk of money for emergencies, because my freezer, vacuum and cat have all broken down this month! (although the kitty has now been repaired
). I will also start to do up my house to make it into the place I want it to be.
It was 'emergencies' and trying to finish my house that got me into debt in the first place. I come from a frugal family and have never really splashed my cash but life throws at you the things you least expect. So next time I will make sure I am more prepared. That way the least expected thing will be winning the lottery.... especially as I don't play it!!!!! :rotfl:Official DFW Nerd Club No. 1150 - Long Haul Supporters Club No 186 - Debt free 26.5.17
Proud to have dealt with my debts0 -
When I am debt-free (summer 2010) I will be cracking open the bubbly with my hubby who has been so supportive while trying in vain to understand as he's never had debts.
I'd love to think I'd build up a nice nest egg asap but instead I think I'll be putting Jinx junior through university which will make me very happy
.
Savings so that I know I can afford to cover all necessities and the odd luxury. I'd love to see theatre tickets or a holiday and KNOW I have the cash available.
Finally, I think I will make a donation to a money-related charity. This site has given me guidance/information and reassurance as it has to countless others and I think those who have come out the other side can afford to give a little back.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
Hello all, I'm new! Thought I would start on this thread as I think deciding what you'll do to celebrate at the end is the most positive way to look at things. My DFD is more than three years away, but I am already looking forward to the party I'm going to throw in 2012...0

When I am debt free, hopefully next year, I intend to save for a decent deposit for a house, then get a mortgage and be a MFW instead of a DFW (although I'll still be here every day
)

My philosophy has changed since I lost my husband. Yes I became debt free and that's a great feeling- able at last to really treat the kids etc, but what a double edged sword!!!
I really believe in living for the moment- savings are great but appreciate what you've got now and live life to the full. I wouldn't change a thing and I have great memories of past holidays, meals etc. Balance is the key- some savings, lots of insurance policies, and loads of treats with your loved ones, after all, you can't take it with you (as my mum used to say!).
Sorry if I depressed you all xx0 -
My ultimate aim would be to have in savings what I had in debt (around £20k at its worst!!) But other than that, I'm just looking forward to being able to go away for weekends and the odd holiday with my other half and our daughter.... and to have a sibling (or two!) for her without having to worry about silly debts from my teenage years! Good luck to everyone x0
