Selection criteria for cars

On Top Gears website they have a rough and ready assessment for the sort of car that would suit you.
Theres quite a difference between the costings of the 207 and the civic though. Peugeot have had some very generous deals for the 207 Verve lately - £3300 off including scrappage for a special edition. But I think its generally acknowledged the german or japanese cars are more solid/reliable.
My son had a hell of a 206, it would cut out unexpectantly, on one occasion as he overtook a lorry on the motorway. He got shot of it after that incident. Hed had it in and out of the garage with no one knowing what the reason was.
Other sons girlfriend has the 207 and she seems to be spending money on it every month for one thing or other. BUT they ARE very pretty cars.0 -
I did have a 207 as a courtesy car, it was ok nothing remarkable though, and the only disconcerting thing was the pedals, and how close they were to each other. With my size 11s, I would often hit two pedals instead of one.0

207 is in a smaller class of car compared to the others so should be chaper all round.
Out of that list I would test drive Mazda 3 (I liked it very much) and Honda Civic.
If looking for a diesel the Honda 2.2 diesel is very refined for a diesel.0 -
Buy a Peugeot 206 and make sure you have good breakdown cover :rotfl:.
If you want an easy life for reliability, go for the Japanese (the Honda/Mazda). The French cars will be much more trouble (particularly the Peugeot) but are more stylish to look at. Well, you can't have everything :rotfl:!!
Well, thanks to all for your help.
Saturday saw us have a try out of a Mazda 3 and Renault Megane. Tried out auto also on the Mazda which was novel. Not much between them in terms of ride/drive but the Mazda won through on the feeling bigger in the cabin. Also the example of the Megane wasnt the best and, having read a number of forums the reliability issue of them - and also the Peugeot meant we plumped for the Mazda 3!
So just need to now decide if it is worth getting a warranty on it (horror stories read about wear & tear clause being used as a get out for ANY work that needs to be done - true/untrue?); arranging the monies into the account to pay ; oh, and insurance and then back on the road :-)
Right.... now off to find comments on Warranty and Asset Protection Insurance.. where on here do I find them then.....?0 -

my clutch went after 32k and warranty company put it down to wear and tear. had a probelm with the engine - wear and tear. I really can't see me buying another warranty but i'm sure there are others who have had good experiences.
