VM Deposit return

Hi
When I signed up for Telewest I had to pay an upfront deposit for (I think) the TV box).
I have now given notice to VM (ex Telewest) as I am moving to BT/O2 broadband and wondered what other peoples experience was getting the 'deposit' back-did they automatically return it via your last bill or did you have to fight tooth and nail to get it?
