At least give planning and building control a call. It wouldn't supprise me if they haven't applied for either. Ask them to come out and check it over because you are worried that they are self building a structure which is attached to your own.

They can't charge you for coming out and doing their job so you have very little to lose!

It may be different rules for different areas but last year when we considered adding a (very small) extension onto the back of our house, the planning officer came out to have a look and told us we had to be one metre away from the border between us and the neighbour.

As for building onto a neighbour's wall....I would have thought that was a 'no', all over the country. Quickest way to find out for sure is to give your local council a ring.

Our neighbours added an extension to the side of their house. It butts up to our driveway and the eaves of the roof overhang our property by 2 foot! The planners passed it! I cannot help think they may have problems when it comes to sell.

Thats because planners don't care who owns the land why did you let them continue?

    Update for you.

Ive just been to the council to report some cracks that have appeared since next doors building started and they said that the inspector will have a look and if he thinks they are building onto our wall he will report back to council and they will take it from there.

Just thought id let you know they are actually building onto our house, a friend of ours who just happens to be a builder had a look over the weekend and confirmed it.

The thing is now ive actually heard them drilling into our wall, what could they possibly be drilling into our wall for?

It depends on what type of extension they are having, but they could well be attaching a beam to your wall if its a lean to style.

This whole thing sounds a bit dodgy to me, when the building control come round make sure they get a notice to cease all work. Whatever they've done they will be responsible for putting right.

    Let us know any developments

Its such a shame, they can be very nice neighbours, they can also be quite awkward with us too, the last thing I want to do is stir up trouble but then im sure if we did anything a bit dodgy they would be the first to report us.

*Looks like the beam theory could very well be exactly what they are doing, as I am typing a delivery of wood beams has just gone next door.*
  • Thanks for the updates - it's good to find out what happens next after one of these queries. I think it's amazing that someone would think it acceptable to build onto someone else's house without even consulting them...

Are the council coming out to see you or your neighbours? If they're not coming out this morning, I'd give them another call raising your concern and tell than that the situation has progressed and you need somone to inspect before they start adding additional loads to your house.

Whilst they probably won't thank you immediately, its better for your neighbours too as any work they put up will more than likely have to come down so the further they go the more there will be to remove.

    Keep us posted
