Lost Endowment Policy

My father many years ago started an endowment policy with the Royal Liver with a view to saving for a deposit for a house. When he came to buy a house the company in question said he had not saved enough and he froze the policy. He'd paid in about £100 and in around 1958/59. Unfortunately he forgot about this and his father had all the documentation. Upon his death this documentation was disposed of we think and my father forgot all about it until now.
We have contacted the Royal Liver but they say unless we can produce some form documentary evidence there is nothing they can do. Is this correct? and is anyone able to offer any advice.

Hi I used to work in the Royal Liver head office. All of the old policy records from this time period were in the original ledgers when I first started there in '83, and the information in the ledgers was later computerised and put onto microfilm. The Liver took years to computerise their records, and when they did you still needed a policy number to locate a policy. When I worked there, it was pretty difficult to try and trace a policy from a name and dob, you needed to at least know the type of policy and table number too.
I should think that there will still be microfilm records of your Dad's policy from this time period - possibly stored alphabetically, but it would need someone to sit at the microfiche and trawl through all the films to locate the policy number and find out whether it still holds any value. This is probably why they've told you they need more information.
