It's a tough market to enter. But try buying a copy of 'the freelance photographers handbook' which is published yearly and contains details of groups who may be interested in work from new photographers.
What sort of subject are you photographing?0 -

Produce prints and get local shops to sell them sale or return
Set up a website showcasing pics of famous landmarks (new angles whereever possible) and sell prints...use Paypal to take money. (This will require marketing....)
Sell prints by hosting gallery events...local libraries etc
Not sure about how stock photos pay - but look at you could find out and submit your photos to some organisations
Diversify into other forms of photography:
Contact local designers and offer your services
Offer to sub for local papers at short notice
PR photography
Weddings
I used to be a photographer, press and pr mainly, but those are a couple of ideas off the top of my head. HTH.

Hiya
Im a fellow photographer and just opened my company at the start of the year.
I specialise in commercial photography and stock photography - landscapes are my favs!
TBH theres not much in the way of stock photography at the moment - I dont know if thats just in Ireland or what but seems unless your prepared to take any work you can its just not worth bothering at the moment.
Best thing I could advise for now, like myself, just build up a good portfolio and wait for this money crisis to calm down - hopefully people will be more willing to put their hands in their pockets for prints etc in the near future!
In the meantime I wish you the best of luck with the photography - Im still pretty new to the industry myself and I know how hard Ive had to work for the past 6 months to get this far!!Life is what you make it.0 -
thank you for your help!
and good luck to yourself0 -
Without sounding too pessimistic it really is a tough time to get into it!
One major problem is the growth in ownership in digital cameras so everyone thinks they can take shots as good as a pro.
I have two chaps I know both pros and one was a wedding specialist who was always busy and always used film. However his work has been getting tougher and tougher so he was forced to take other 'none photography' work to make ends meet. The other has a much broader client base and has huge charisma but even so he is working so hard to keep the work coming in. I hear of lots of money being spent on big adverts and often with a a nil response.
I did meet one other chap who has gone into the 'second photographer' at weddings but doing the informal shots. Never heard of it before he told me but he told me that his clients are exteremely pleased and like his shots more than the number one photographers.
I go on the house selling board mostly having been an agent and find the qualilty of shots being used by some agents appalling. Anything there you could do teach them how to take or offer to take or offer to enhance what they have?A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.0
