That's like saying why buy a BMW M5, when you can buy a Ford Fiesta.
The Garmin i3 is a very low spec product, but works fine if that is all you can afford.
The TomTom One has far superior GPS Sirf III receiver, and a touch screen, and has built in rechargeable battery just for starters.0 -

I have had a Tomtom GO and a Tomtom One, and I actually prefer the Garmin. Its small and the touch screen was a bit of a nightmare on the tomtom. The scroll wheel is better I find.
Sure tomtom has bluetooth for connectivity and it can route you if you hit traffic better but the cradle on the One is crap. The Garmin has most of europe which costs you another £99 on the tomtom. This signature is not mine!0 -
Personally I would be unlikely to ever buy a BMW M5, I detest snobs and I see it as a poser's car. Whether it offers value-for-money is also debatableThat's like saying why buy a BMW M5, when you can buy a Ford Fiesta
So does that imply that you need a constant supply of new AA batteries for the Garmin? It doesn't even run off the cigar lighter in the car? Now that WOULD be basic...The TomTom One has far superior GPS Sirf III receiver, and a touch screen, and has built in rechargeable battery just for startersThanks to all who post constructively.

talkshop....I'm surprised you can read either the TomTom or the Garmin with your nose so far in the air..........LOL!!talkshop wrote:That's like saying why buy a BMW M5, when you can buy a Ford Fiesta.

Why do people like you always assume " if it's all you can afford??" ....how do you know anyone else's finances..or is it just snobbery..you don't know how childish you sounded.........LOL!!
Try reading about Garmin before you make snide remarks........http://www.garmin.com/aboutGarmin/whyGarmin.html

I don't think he can afford himself. If he could afford, he'll just add the car manufacturer's own Sat Nav.You'll Never Be Rich Working for Someone Else0

I dont think talkshop meant to sound snobbish or whatever, he was just expressing his opinion about why its more expensive, e.g. the SIRF III receiver0

Good to see some diverse opinions!
I must admit I don't understand the Garmin v. TomTom brand name concept - but having owned both, I'd personally rate the TomTom as better value, even at twice the price. However, the Garmin at it's current price is a really good deal - I just feel the TomTom is more intuitive to use, and for me has proved more reliable/faster/up-to-date than the Garmin.
I'm sure few people would feel let down by buying either..... which might not be the case with the Navigator.....the only 2 people I know who have bought one have both returned it within days and swapped, one for the Garmin, one for the TomTom.0 -
I had the Garmin and it got me lost on 2 of the three occasions I used it - it didn't seem to be able to find whole streets in the centre of Newbury on one occasion and on the other I'm not sure what went wrong but it couldn't seem to locate a postcode it was trying to get me to - which meant I was late for two important meetings with new clients. I took it back and got a Tom tom 300 - not had a problem yet in about 11 journeys where it has been used.0
