How do I claim a tax rebate? Paid emergency tax

Hello,
When it comes to tax issues I really have no idea and I need all the help I can get. I have worked on and off for the past year, I have also been on job seekers allowance.
My last 2 jobs I was emergency taxed at both and I want to claim it back. I'd also like to know if there is an amount that if you earn under in a whole year you can claim all your tax back?
Can anyone give me some simple advice? Will the citizens advice bureau help me make a claim? Should I ring the tax office and ask how to claim it back? I've had a bad experience with them before, rude and unhelpful staff.
What is the best way to go about it?
I have a p45 from every job that ended this tax year (april 08 - 09)
I am on Jsa at the moment, will that affect my rebate? (Jsa is taxable income)
If someone could help me out I'd be really grateful
Thanks

You need to get together all your P45s, and payslips and jot down the periods you were working/not working/claiming JSA for the whole tax year from April 08 - April 09. If you were claiming JSA at 5 April you should get a P60 from the benefit office in the next few weeks.
The cheapest and easiest way of getting a refund on your tax is either to pop in to your local tax office and let someone there work it out for you or photocopy everything (in case the tax office loses your papers) and send it to your tax office and ask them to work out if you are due any tax back. When you phone you get someone in a call centre and they're not always well trained or very helpful. The staff in local offices are usually a little better.
Alternatively you could go to a small local accountant but this is likely to cost you at least £75 - £100.
The amount you could earn before tax for the year to April 2009 was £6035. (For 2009-2010 it is £6475)
To help keep your tax straight in future, it's useful to hand p45's from one job/ benefit claim to the next one - saves you being taxed on emergency.0 -
All the above is correct other than two things:
1) HMRC will not accept photocopies to calculate your rebate. They can and quite possibly will lose your paperwork  but will provide you with documentation to prove earnings and tax if they do so.
2) You are cunfusing emergency tax with BR. The emergency tax code for 08/09 was 603L M1. If you were on the emergency code your rebate is likely to be much less than if you paid BR tax ~ just something to bear in mind:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Well I thought I had all P45s and details but I'm missing 3 which are important. I will have to hunt high and low from them tomorrow as there is no way I have binned them.
My friend told me I don't have to send them I just have to send a letter with all my details. The dates when I was working the place, how much I earnt in total and how much I was taxed. Same with when I claimed JSA, dates of claim and total amount claimed. Is this true?
If I can't find my p45s does that mean I can't get a rebate. I have every payslip so I could add up pay and tax and get the details that way.
I am claiming Jsa to date. Will I get a p60 or something? (I don't think that is the correct term) Will I get a bit of paper with the totals of what I have earnt in 2008/2009 and the tax deducted in total? Or would I only get that if I was in employment?
If anyone can help me further I'd be grateful. I am not good with tax things as you can see.

I have found a simple telephone call to your local tax office - number should be on your P45 - ask the advisor what you should have paid in tax and if you've paid too much, they usually refund with a cheque and may issue you with a new tax code. Has worked for me. they treat each year individually so being on JSA now will not affect last years tax.'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' : Member number 632

Speak to the employers for which you dont have the P45's and ask for a Statement of Earnings. This should be enough for HMRC.
I doubt very much that HMRC will issue a cheque for a rebate by a telephone call alone but one can but try.
In theory you should get a P60 from DWP not sure if that will also be a reality though
