Printer broke down six weeks later. No Warranty?

Hi Any Advice here,most welcome:
Purchased a second hand business printer from business seller who specialises in printers, six weeks ago. When it arrived it had a warning message that the ink was low. I e mailed the seller about this with a few other queries, as the low ink was not mentioned in description. He politely ansered other questions and advised that the ink had not been low when it left him and that he had described the item correctly as far as he knew and that there were pictures of the ink sticks in situ. He did offer to refund if I shippped back. I decided to keep as did not want to pay shipping.
However, within less than a week and only having printed a few pages, the error message displayed,' No ink' and woudl not print at all. My OH phoned the guy and asked for compensation to buy ink (one ink stick each colour would cost circa £40.) He refused, basically saying we were either incompetent or liars and that we had won the auction at a good price.
TBH we were getting nowhere and could not be bother to argue so we just bought the ink and got on with our lives.
However yesterday the printer stopped working displaying an error message, which I understand relates to the print head. My OH does not want to fiddle with it or pay for a service engineer and wants to get back to the seller. However the experience with the seller is not positive and he did not offer a warranty with the listing.
Do I have any rights at all, or is it just tough?

Ink and print heads are CONSUMABLES. Sometimes print heads are part of the ink cartridges and sometimes they are separate.
There is no reason for there to be ANY ink in a second hand printer.
Regular replacement of ink cartridges and periodic replacement of print heads (if not part of the ink cartridge) is not a defect.
If you have run the cleaning cycle and the error message remains, theny you probably need to go and buy new print heads.
What make and model of printer is it, so we can try and advise you??British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Its a Xerox phaser 8400. The code relates to a hardware issue. It is not possible to run the cleaning cycle becuase the printer is inoperable0

Ahhh, it's a solid ink/laser printer.
How much did you pay for it (excluding delivery)? Second hand ones sell on eBay for between £7 and £70 - there is a good reason why they are so cheap.
The error probably relates to the drum and fuser requiring replacement - life of these consumables is typically 10,000 pages, but this figure is usually based on 5% page coverage and regular use, with printer always powered up/on standby.
As for solid ink/toner, a set of ink will do approx 1000 pages, again at 5% coverage. If you print A4 photos, this will probably drop to 150 pages per set of ink. (Based on Xerox website suggesting that packs of 3 cartridges of one colour will do 3400 pages at 5%)
Colour laser printers are expensive to run because of the toner costs and multiple toners. All laser printers are expensive to run as the drum and fuser consumables are expensive - often costing as much as the printer itself.
The printer was working when you got it and it appears the fault may be the requirement to replace drum/fuser service pack.
What is the error/code?
Low cost A4 colour laser printers are usually disposed of by companies before they need new drum/fuser due to the replacement cost compared to the assett value and the cost of a new printer.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Yes its a solid ink printer. The error code is 07:010.43:12534. Research on tech sites indicates that this is related to the printhead, not drum/fuser pack.
I have the history about the ink to indicate the relationship with the seller. I paid over £120 and was unhappy at having to replace the ink. whilst the pics showed stix in situ, the ink needed replacing almost immediately, and clearly I was unable to print the no of pages stated
I realise its probably tough luck, but just wondered if I do in fact have any redress as OH is v. unhappy with me!!!0 -
Xerox website isn't very helpful!!
07010.43 error code - their website says the printer requires a service.
Incidentally, have you installed the update printhead firmware for this printer? It's on the Xerox website:
