LG free touch KP500 text problem...help please

Got the above phone and put a Virgin Mobile PAYG sim into it. Everything works fine except it won't send texts-will receive and send calls and receive texts but won't send them it just say "waiting"-can't find anything in the info book-am i doing something wrong or is there a fault with the phone??? Thanks.
