windows updates

Going through my Add/Remove programs list today and there is a loonnngg list of updates etc. Is it possible to remove them without affecting windows?

why would you want to remove the updates themselves when they are likely to be there fixing vulnerabilities uncovered in the OS itself?

    Dont remove them

There is a button at the top of the add/remove programs saying "show updates" - if thats ticked then untick it and it may make your list more manageable.

You will find that all the updates will be in the Windows directory in folders names similar to this $NtUninstallKB911564$ These folders can only be seen however if you have enabled in the folders option to show hidden files and folders.

I delete these folders once updates have taken place, this does not remove the update, it just removes the download. It does mean however that you cannot uninstal the update at a later time, but as already posted...why would you want to uninstall an update.

Once these folders are removed, if you goto add remove programs and click to unistall the update it will just remove the entry from the add remove box...it does make it look a lot cleaner then :)

Yeah, it'll be at the top of the Add/Remove Programs window. If it isn't then you don't have Service Pack 2 installed, which I suggest you do.

Another way of removing them is via something like TweakUI. It's a small, free suite of little apps put together by Microsoft. Just google "TweakUI" and it should come up. It has functionality to remove entries from the Add/Remove Programs without actually removing the app/update/etc.. itself.
